I can't believe it's been three weeks since my last hatch! Here are the Cast of Characters #2…
My computer room is fast approaching it's elastic limit…The babies are still under an infra red lamp, but I had to somehow expand their living area. Using what I had on hand, this is what evolved…a Figure-Eight Brooder! Two kiddie-pools cut and connected (God bless duct tape!) I originally had placed the pools together, but without the cutouts. The older babies wanted nothing to do with it, because once on the other side, even though they had no problem jumping back and forth, they felt they were all alone… because they couldn't see over the top of one pool into the other! Who would have thought?!?
Look closely…see the chick on the top of the wire fence, on the right-hand side?
There are plenty of homemade toys to keep them occupied, and plenty of places for them to hide, sleep, and roost. There are 24 babies…14 @ 4 weeks of age, 10 @ 3 weeks of age. I have to work on putting together some living quarters in the coop for them, because they are now flying up to the top of the wire fencing (which is 2 feet high), then flying back down into the brooder. They've been doing this for the past week, and pretty soon they'll be flying down into the room, which will cause all sorts of problems! Let me tell you…Seramas are FLYERS, even as adults! Poor Sweetpea's kitty box has been relocated to the hallway, just outside the door…she hasn't been able to enter this room (her room) for the past month! Also, my computer and printer are in this room, and they are not happy with the dust being generated! So, hopefully, their new quarters will be ready next week!
I Just love your feathered babies. I keep mine in Big storage boxs till flying age. Never thought of the toys thing great idea
What I wanna know, Juliette, is how did you get these little darlings to stand so still and pose for their pictures? Precious!
I love it! I never thought to make them things to play on, but Im going to borrow your idea! Also, Id like to know your photo secrets!
Your pictures are wonderful! I have to ask too…how did you get them to pose so beautifully? Ours are sooo difficult!
We used lots of similar toys for our babies, but their favourite was the cardboard tube from a roll of papertowels…oh how they’d run through it and then when they couldn’t fit anymore they had fun rolling it around and balancing on it.
Enjoy your birds, they ARE beautiful.
