Merry Christmas Everyone!
My Christmas Hatch arrived on Christmas Eve (Day), one week after my Pre-Christmas Hatch. The results are as follows:
Pre-Christmas Hatch gave me 11 out of 13 babies originally set…2 definite blues, 1 black/split chocolate if it's a roo, or a black pullet (I'll take either one gladly, LOL), several blue/white birds, like their mother. So far, that's the best I can do in the color-predicting department. The spots on their heads are from food coloring, I'll be banding them tomorrow.
My Christmas hatch, which arrived on Christmas Eve (Day), gave me 7 out of 9 eggs originally set…1 definite chocolate, 1 possible chocolate, 3 possible blacks or chocolates, can't tell on the others yet. Everyone appears to be very healthy and vigorous, for which I am very grateful! Pictures will be taken in a day or two! I plan on setting up my original “Figure-Eight” brooder tomorrow. I dismantled my last brooder that I posted about, for several reasons… I loved the fact that the babies were eye-level, but I didn't like the fact that they tended to fly out, or fall down onto the floor, when I opened the doors. I also didn't like raising them on wire; I felt they needed the ability to “dust bathe”, as it were, in the bedding, and be able to scratch around. My perception, perhaps, but that's what I felt. I also found that they didn't fly up onto the upper tiers (shelves), because they were frizzleds and silkieds, and at that age, they don't fly, at least not vertically! So, it's back to the ole' kiddie pools tomorrow!
I hope everyone's hatches were successful and without mishaps… I always hold my breath until the last chick is out of the egg! Two more hatches to go… New Year's, and then the following week. I'm very glad that I started collecting eggs for hatching when I did, because most of my girls are now broody! ARGHH!!! How can they do this to me??? Don't they know it's too cold to raise babies outside in the winter?!? I've been fighting several girls for a while now, but I now have at least one broody hen in every single cage! My apologies to all who have inquired about hatching eggs… I guess we're all going to have to wait for awhile!
I also hope everyone had a great holiday. Here's to a Peaceful and Prosperous 2011!
